The Glass Iris was created to honor the memory of Donna Conner, who lost her valiant fight with type 1 diabetes in 2011. Donna’s husband, daughter, and family generously support the Sight Center in its mission to prevent blindness and promote independence for those with vision loss and those who are blind. Displayed at the Center’s main entrance, the piece is a loving tribute to Donna’s memory and spirit.
The eye is often called the window to the soul, or the lamp of the body, representing wisdom, truth, and honesty. The Glass Iris reflects Donna’s deep understanding of life, her optimism and gratitude, and her unwavering commitment to doing the right thing.
The medium of glass, resilient and transformative, mirrors Donna’s courage and ability to adapt and evolve, creating beauty and depth wherever she went.
Heavenly stars along the outer edge of the Iris provide guidance, insight, and light in dark times. They symbolize the interconnectedness of life, where each being, like each original piece of glass, fits with others to create something uniquely beautiful
The Sight Center’s board, staff, and clients are profoundly grateful for the transformative gift that made this tribute possible, creating a truly special representation of the love and light that Donna brought into the lives of all who knew her. May this piece inspire and remind us of her enduring influence.
The Making of the Glass Iris: A Journey in Light and Form
The creation of the Glass Iris was a deeply collaborative and heartfelt process. Artists, Tom Ferraro, Edward Grout and Steve Mik, from the Looking Glass Art Project, worked closely with the Conner family, Sight Center clients, and staff to ensure that every detail reflected Donna’s spirit and legacy. Through shared stories, personal insights, and creative dialogue, the team captured the essence of Donna—her warmth, resilience, and vibrant presence—transforming those emotions into a stunning work of art.
With deep gratitude and remembrance,
